Supporting Veterinary Growth and Expertise in Dentistry

We’re passionate about raising the standard of equine dental care through education and collaboration across the veterinary community.

We provide practical learning opportunities, collaborative case support, and resources that help veterinarians grow their confidence in dental diagnosis and treatment. Our goal is to make evidence-based equine dentistry more accessible and clinically relevant in general practice.

Collaborative Learning

Collaborative Learning

Our team welcomes open dialogue with veterinarians seeking guidance on dental cases.
We offer:

  • Case discussions: We’re always happy to review images, radiographs, and treatment plans to provide insight and second opinions.
  • In-practice education: Our vets are available to visit clinics and provide continuing education lectures, or perform advanced dental techniques in your familiar setting.
  • CPD workshops: Small-group workshops focused on practical, case-based learning, including work on cadavers and clinical cases.

These sessions are designed to promote real-world learning, focusing on the conditions vets encounter day-to-day. Get in touch if you’d like to learn more.

Research and Lecturing

Research and Lecturing

Dental Vet’s clinical approach is grounded in research. Dr Kirsten Jackson’s PhD, awarded by the University of Western Australia, focused on equine peripheral dental caries. This disease is particularly prevalent in Western Australia’s unique climate and feeding conditions. Her research has been published internationally and presented at conferences across Australia and internationally, helping to advance the global understanding of this condition.

Since 2013, Dr Jackson’s continued work has led to major breakthroughs in how diet, water quality, and management contribute to equine dental disease. She presented her findings at the European Veterinary Dentistry Society Conference, Equine Veterinarians Australia’s Bain Fallon Conference, ENIDE congress in Brazil, ANZCVS’s Science Week Conference and numerous local events in Western Australia.

In 2016, her self-funded research was recognised with the Equine Veterinarians Australia (EVA)/CEVA Education Scholarship, supporting her postgraduate research at the University of Western Australia.

Beyond research, Dr Jackson has contributed extensively to education, teaching equine management and dentistry to Murdoch University veterinary students, and providing hands-on training at Rural Practice weekends. She also volunteered in the Gili Islands, where she treated working ponies and trained local veterinarians in essential dental care.

Both Dr Jackson and Dr Victoria Kö-Peternelj are active in professional education, regularly delivering lectures, workshops, and clinical demonstrations to veterinarians and horse owners in Australia and abroad. These sessions translate scientific findings into actionable clinical practice, supporting vets in delivering evidence-based dental care.

Published Articles and Research Contributions

Our team’s academic and clinical work has been published in peer-reviewed international veterinary journals and presented at international conferences, highlighting emerging research in equine caries, endodontic therapy, and advanced restorative techniques.

Through ongoing data collection and collaboration, Dental Vet continues to build the evidence base for equine dental medicine, particularly in areas relevant to Australian feeding and environmental conditions.
