Advanced Periodontal Disease Treatments

Advanced Periodontal Disease is a very painful and very common condition in our equine patients where feed becomes stuck between the teeth and rots in there, causing a very painful infection. Left untreated it can progress to apical infection (‘tooth root abscess’), sinus infections, bone loss and osteomyelitis (bone infections) as well as premature tooth loss so it is not something we want to ignore! At Dental Vet, we are very proactive about treating periodontal disease and use the latest procedures and techniques, learned from veterinary dentists around the world. In 2016, we published our research in the international ‘Journal of Veterinary Dentistry’ where we compared the efficacy of different treatment methods for periodontal disease and we are able to use these findings to better treat our patients. We use a variety of different treatment methods depending on the severity and are often able to achieve significant improvement.

A polyvinyl siloxane ‘temporary filling’ placed over the diastema (gap between the teeth). This helps prevent feed from getting back in there and allows the gingiva underneath to heal.
